Project Steps
Remove headboard from bed frame if possible. Place mattress and box spring in a separate room. Cover bed frame and with newspaper and masking tape if you can’t separate the headboard.
If your bed doesn’t have a headboard, take a quick trip to your local lumber yard and purchase some medium density fiberboard or clear pine and some pine molding. Miter the pine molding at top corners with a miter saw/box. You may want to have everything.
Prepare wood surfaces with an all over sanding. Wipe off residue with a damp paper towel and let dry.
Apply American Accents Spray Primer to all wood surfaces (especially if using bare wood).
While trim pieces are still independent of headboard wood, paint with American Accents gold paint in crackle kit. Follow application tips and dry times on package.
Apply American Accents gold paint in crackle kit to the headboard piece. Follow application tips and dry times on package.
After gold paint is dry, draw out harlequin design on headboard with pencil. Mask off areas to be sprayed with alternate color to protect them. We started with American Accents Gilded Black. Follow application tips and drying times on package.
After first color is dry, mask freshly painted areas off loosely with newspaper and masking tape to protect them while applying the second color, American Accents Venetian White.
When everything is dry, apply American Accents Matte Clear to all wood pieces. This will help ensure a good night’s sleep (for the new paint job at least).
When all pieces are sufficiently dry, wrap pine molding around headboard piece, attaching it with nails and wood glue.
Head over to your favorite linen boutique and pick out some new duds for your fancy new sleeping quarters!
