Painting over paneling is not as difficult as you may think. The secret is to use a great primer and good technique.

Materials
Zinsser B-I-N®
Clean rag
Mineral spirits
Household ammonia
Water
Roller, brush, spray or pad
Topcoat - color of choice
Project Steps
Before priming, its important to clean any contamination, like wax, dust, dirt or grease from the surface.
Clean all surfaces with a clean rag saturated with mineral spirits (paint thinner) to remove surface contamination.
If surface contamination is excessive, a second mineral spirits wash may be required. Rinse rag between applications. Rags containing mineral spirits should be discarded properly.
To be sure you have removed all traces of surface contamination and paint thinner residue, wash the surface with a 50/50 mixture of household ammonia and water.
Allow the clean surface to dry for approximately 30 minutes.
Apply one coat of B-I-N Primer-Sealer with a roller, brush, pad or sprayer, and let dry for an hour. If high humidity conditions exist, allow longer to make sure the primer has dried thoroughly before applying a topcoat.
Follow the primer with one or two coats of a top-quality finish paint. (Tip: You can have the primer tinted by your retailer to match the color of the topcoat, which can help reduce the number of coats needed to complete the job.
