Project Steps
The antique mirror finish adds an Old World look to an ordinary flea market table. To coordinate the look, apply the finish to the panels of cabinet doors by first removing the doors and working on a flat surface.
Begin by finding a flea market dining table. Cut a round of MDF to the size of the tabletop using a jig saw. Secure the MDF to the table from underneath using wood glue and wood screws. Sand and prime the top with American Accents Primer. Let dry.
Fill a spray bottle with water and spray the surface. Spray American Accents Charcoal Black spray paint in light, short spurts over the water in selected places. Spritz with water in the left hand and spray with black spray paint in the right hand.
Mix poly with rust tints and with a brush, dab a small amount into the water until it diffuses. Do the same with poly tinted with cream tints by dabbing areas other than the ones where the rust was applied. Can also apply with a spray bottle. Let dry.
Mix two part (resin and hardener) clear coat polymer (consult local paint store for availability) according to manufacturer's directions and pour over surface to the thickness of 1/8 inch.
While wet, spray silver paint in areas to replicate a layered look. It will float on the polymer to look like ice breaking up. Stop when you like the look.
Repeat layers by spritzing water and re-spraying with rust and cream. Coat again with clear coat polymer. Let dry.
Remove the painter's tape. Sand around the edges using a Dremel MultiPro tool to level the lip of the polymer coating with the tabletop.
Paint the sanded portion of the polymer coating with polyurethane to remove scratches and restore the shine.
