f you have ugly old kitchen cabinets, there is a way to change them into beautiful painted kitchen cabinets with very little effort and even less money. By using RUST-OLEUM primer and paint, you can create a custom finish on your old cabinets, that will make them look like new.

For a step-by-step explanation of how I created these gorgeous cabinets in my home, please read my full article.

Materials
RUST-OLEUM Primer (to avoid having to sand the cabinets). Choose the type of primer depending on the surface you're going to refinish (e.g.: wood, plastic).
Three shades of RUST-OLEUM paints.
Three paint brushes
Protective Finish (to seal the finish on the paint, so you'll be able to wipe the cabinets clean in future, without damaging the painted surface).
Project Steps
RUST-OLEUM offer different paints and primers depending on the surface you're refinishing. If your cabinets are wood, use wood primer, if they're made of plastic, use plastic primer.
Begin by priming the cabinets. The primer prevents you from having to first sand the cabinets, and so saves a lot of time and mess.
Your three shades of paint should include a main color, a second slightly darker color, and third striking color with rusty undertones. Again choose you RUST-OLEUM paint depending on the type of surface you're refinishing. And as you're painting, always work on small areas at a time, since the paints will need to be blended as you part of the painting technique.
Begin by painting the cabinet with your main color. Then smear 3 lines of the sharp, rusty color, then blend them in (each time using a separate paint brush).
Finally add texture with the third paint, again blending the colors in. Please see my photograph for comparison.
Once the paint is dry, apply the protective finish, to seal the finish on the paint, so you'll be able to wipe the cabinets clean in future, without damaging the painted surface. RUST-OLEUM offer really cool finishes like crackle or antique, which can add texture to the look and feel of your cabinets.
