I had an old soot covered fireplace, with ugly wood trim going up to the ceiling. I used RUST-OLEUM paint to created a textured clean design on the bricks. Then I covered the old ugly wood trim with plywood and painted over it, again with a soft, textured design.

For all my ideas about freshening your old fireplace, please see my full article.

Materials
Three shades of paint, from lightest to darkest, but all fairly light. I used RUST-OLEUM satin finish Soft Wheat, Nutmeg and Ivory Silk.
sea spong
plywood
glue
Project Steps
Take your RUST-OLEUM satin finish Soft Wheat, Nutmeg and Ivory Silk, and with the sea sponge dab the Soft Wheat on the fireplace exterior (your soiled bricks.)
Next dab some of the Nutmeg, then some of the lvory Silk, and blend a little. Look at the picture to see the effect you are shooting for.
When you finish painting the fireplace, glue your plywood to the ugly wood trim that extends over your fireplace, to conceal it. Then repeat the paint design on the plywood, or paint the plywood to match your wall.
Paint the mantel a lighter or darker shade to make it stand out. In my case, simply semi-gloss white was just perfect, since this is a basement and I wanted to add brightness to the room.
