I had an ugly banister that was too curvy for sanding and re-staining. Instead, I removed it and created a sleek banister. There are endless varieties to how you can make your new banister look, depending on the RUST-OLEUM paint you use. I described the steps of the project in this article . It's really very easy to do and the results are stunning.

Materials
Wood plank to fit over your existing metal banister frame
RUST-OLEUM paint in the finish you like.
Project Steps
The installation of the new banister was really easy. Basically I took measurements as described in my article , and custom cut the wood at my local home improvement center.
The fun part is the painting. I just love that RUST-OLEUM has different finishes, like crackled finish or shiny metal. I went with wood, because of the rest of the stairway's decor.
