I love to find old wooden boxes in garage sales and turn them into beautiful painted wooden boxes. Here I'd like to talk about my latest decorative box. For more ideas, please read my article on homemade decorative boxes.

Materials
Old wooden box. (If you're not sure if a garage sale find is clean enough to bring into your home, check my articles for helpful info on signs of infestation in old wooden boxes)
Rust Oleum spray paint in the colors of your choice. Choose at least two main colors, then white to create highlighted edges.
Stencil with the pattern you wish to paint onto your old wooden box.
Project Steps
If the box is free of infestation, it's ready to be used. You can sand it or prime it to prepare the surface for painting.
Paint the box with the color of your choice. Rust Oleum spray paints make the job easy, but remove any hardware first to avoid spray painting it, and be sure to work in the open air. (Please note that I chose to stain the box rather than paint for this project.)
Once dry, use your stencil to spray paint the base color of your design.
Then spry paint on a scrap of wood and use a thin brush to add highlights to your painted image. Add white to blend colors into lighter tones, or to create highlighted edges.
