Previously painted or partially rusted metal

  1. Sand or wire brush to remove all loose rust and/or chipping paint.
  2. Wash with mild detergent, rinse, and dry thoroughly. Your project success rides on getting rid of all of the muck, so think twice before skimping here.
  3. Prime rusted areas with Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Rusty Metal Primer. For all other areas, prime with Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Clean Metal Primer. If the rust hasn't won the battle yet (and has left the metal slightly rusted), you can use Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Rust Reformer which neutralizes rust and creates a surface that can be top-coated.
  4. You are ready to transform your formerly rusty object with color!

Bare metal

  1. Wash, rinse, and allow to dry thoroughly. Do this well and you're in great shape for the rest of the project.
  2. Prime with Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Clean Metal Primer.
  3. Paint. Voila! Something ordinary becomes extraordinary!
