Masking

  1. Prepare and prime the surface to be painted according to directions on back of can.
  2. Apply a base coat and allow to dry completely.
  3. Apply contact paper to the dry surface assuring the edges are securely adhered.
  4. Using a ruler and pencil, create your pattern on the contact paper.
  5. With a razor or utility knife, cut out the part of the pattern that will expose the area to be painted. Lightly drag the razor or utility knife across the contact paper just enough to cut the paper. (Watch out for the table below!) Securely attach the pattern to the surface by pressing the edges of the pattern firmly to the surface.
  6. Apply a few thin coats of the second color over the surface. (A few thin coats usually offers better results than one thick coat.)
  7. After the surface is coated, allow the paint to dry before removing the contact paper.
